As some of you know, I'm heading home in August for a week of debauchery.

Here's a pic my friend sent the other day of beautiful Newfoundland.

If anyone wants to visit (I'm looking at YOU PF), PM me and I'll convince you!

Steph, that is a fabulous picture. Thanks for sharing it. Bet you're looking forward to that trip in August. Probably a bit early for 'have a nice time' but ... well ... in case I forget later ... "HAVE A NICE TIME!" :D :D

Steph,

Forgive my ignorance of Canadian geography, but wasn't "Ann of Green Gables" set in the Atlantic Provinces?

Steph

Anne of Green Gables was based in Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland is more easterly than PEI.

And I want to party in all 4 bars!

just kidding;)

I told you how much I've wanted to go there. And that was before I met you.:) Now I REALLY want to cum there.:D

...friendly, friendly, friendly people ...
You don't have to tell us that. Some of us DO remember where the planes went on 9/11 and how well our people were treated.

Believe it or not, an enterprising Newfoundlander actually makes "Iceberg Vodka" from . . .. you guessed it . . . icebergs!

I think I'm secretly a Newfie, and I was kidnapped as a child......

Where are you from, Fenian? Go to Newfoundland!!!! Nobody ever regrets it!

When Kevin Spacey was there to film "The Shipping News" he had four bodyguards with him. When he realized nobody thought he was anything special because he was an actor (most Newfs are quite dramatic and artistic), he ended up sending two of them home. He loved it there, too. He talked us up on Leno and Letterman.

Newfoundland rocks!

The title of my thread is one of the lines from our anthem - the only province in Canada with an anthem.

Ode to Newfoundland
Words and music by Sir Cavendish Boyle

When Sunrays crown thy pine clad hills
And Summer spreads her hand
When silvern voices tune thy rills
We love thee smiling land
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, smiling land.

When spreads thy cloak of shimm'ring white
At Winter's stern command
Thro' shortened day and starlit night
We love thee, frozen land
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, frozen land.

When blinding storm gusts fret thy shore
And wild waves lash thy strand
Thro' spindrift swirl and tempest roar
We love thee, wind-swept land
We love thee, we love thee
We love thee, wind-swept land.

As loved our fathers, so we love
Where once they stood we stand
Their prayer we raise to heav'n above
God guard thee, Newfoundland
God guard thee, God guard thee
God guard thee, Newfoundland.

PF, you've chatted with Tyler - don't you know that I'm the one who deserves a medal?!?! He was asking touristy questions like how many piers/docks were by my parent's house - I have no clue.

David, save your pennies and get down for a visit!

Pardon my geographical ignorance. In the '60s,when I was in the service,I used to pull "Alert" duty in Labrador. At the time,we had
an air base there. Is that anyplace near there? When you could see(thru the snow)it was beautiful.I only went there in the winter
months, they said that it was beautiful in the spring& summer!

I would’ve bet that you’d just reached over with your shillelagh and put one small lump:eek: on the poor guy for each wharf in sight. ;)

Irish - Labrador is part of Newfoundland . . . the province is officially called Newfoundland and Labrador but damn, that's a long name to type! Labrador is apparently warm and beautiful in the summer but it snows a lot in winter!

One lump for each wharf . . . . that's an awesome idea, PF!!!

Steph---The base was Goose Bay Labrador.I don't even know if they still have a base there. We would keep the engines(of the
planes)preheated. It was so cold on the flightline, that we used to
use hydraulic oil ,in the preheat engines to get them to turn over.
If we went out to fuel the preheat engines,it snowed so heavily,
that we had to tie a 30' rope from the plane door to our waist!
I would start the APU(auxiliarly power unit)on the plane& keep
rotating in its exhaust so I wouldn't freeze.Unairmanlike, but it kept me alive! Irish

Goose Bay still has a base, as far as I know. It's a major employer.

I think on Sept. 11, a lot of planes landed there, too.
