Looks like us Panhandlers will be hosting one tomorrow. Do you have any tips for what you do to prepare for natural emergencies in your area?

You coastal lovies....hold on tight!

Had to cut short our vacation in PCB once because of inpending hurricane, my prep involved loading the car up in the rain & driving north like a bat outa hell...the same rain followed us all the way to Montgomery AL...

As far as natural emergencies in my own area, we have to stay on our toes for twisters, esp. since the F3 ripped thru downtown back in '98, proving that major cities donot protect one from tornadoes...it passed about a mile north of my workplace, I saw it as I was driving in...when I pulled in the parking lot, my co-workers were all standing outside to get a look...
Our prep involves dragging the family (inc. the dog) down to the basement & turning on tv or radio to monitor...if a twister does come, we would get under the porch crawl space (12" of concrete overhead should provide a safe haven)

Ugh two hurricanes in one week just ain't right!

I am going out tonight to get the bottled water, batteries and some canned food. It's predicted to hit Orlando at 10am Friday. Crossing fingers that it turns and goes in another directions. At least being in the middle of the state we don't normally get anthing that bad. But it has happened and can again.

OMFG!!!!!!

Please oh please don't send the tail end up this way Lil! It's been pending all day here...and the weekend looks like a washout so far as the weather stations are concerned. Can I send my 125 guests a bit south? My party might be a washout too...and I have no rain date. OK...you make 500 homemade meatballs and five large pork roasts for pulled pork au jus and then NOT have the party! Arrggggggg! Where the fuck is she? I'm gonna kill the shit outta MOTHER NATURE!!!!!!!!

Please be safe everyone! *sigh*

I love you guys!

Well for natural disasters, I guess we all pull up a chair, sit back, and watch. Myself nothing like the Thunder Gods tossing bolts back and forth accross the sky to get the blood going--personally I love to walk in storms. But I have plenty of candles and normally a wall stocked lardder anyway (alot of canned foods)

But seriously, I suggest filling ever tub and sink with water--have plenty of candles and get lots of canned foods and things that will keep. But also place blankets in a dry place that is securred, just incase you lose a roof. And lastly, leave at least one cell phone on the charger to let your loved ones know you are ok :)

(((Lixy))) The weather guy up here predicts rain for us Friday-Sunday.... Can you start calling ppl now with a rain date and freeze the food?

To all our Florida pixies.... Please do what ever you need to do to stay safe!!

And don't forget to check in when it's all over. Maybe use this thread just to say "Hi, I'm ok". If we don't hear from you we'll be worried. ok. :) :)

I am one of those people who loves a good storm. The ex use to sit on the porch and watch me and his son out playing in the rain.
But as a child I remeber going into the underground storm celler with a radio and sitting it out. I was more scared of what was hiding in the dark coners than the storm, lol.
Now days is the same unless the house is actually shaking to the point I think it might be coming apart I am somewhere where I can at least hear the rain. If it is bad I will go to the bathroom and wait it out.

we get a fair amount of tornadoes every year but a lot of people just sit there and watch them :D (yes I am one of the dumb ones that watch... what can I say I like to watch  )

Cheyanne

I must come out of my cave more often!!!

I don't know if I would rather be in "hurricaine alley" or "tornado alley"....with hurricaines you get a heads up far in advance, but the power and destruction of them.... hmmmm, tornadoes don't last very long, but can drop out of the sky without warning.

Just be safe (((to all Pixies in the path of Charley)))

One of the best things about living in England has got to be the fact that there are really no hurricanes or tornadoes (to speak of) no volcanoes, no Earthquakes, few poisonous snakes or spiders, no forest fires, very little flooding, very rarely dangerous amounts of snowfall.......basically not too much to worry about in the way of natural disasters.....in fact the only natural disaster we have is Tony B liar (oops, I mean Tony Blair).

Heard about you guys in Florida this morning on the news though, and I instantly thought of all my Pixie friends. Be safe all you lovely people.

I’ve been watching Bonnies’ progression, Lil. How much more rain will it take to turn you town in a quicksand pit?

gekkogecko
08-12-2004, 09:57 AM
Not much. Used to live there. Unlike Lilith, I lived basically at the bottom of the hill, so I had to have 3' high flood walls around my house.

I can't stop watching the weather channel! It's all very stressful.

*glub*glub*glub* my patio has been under since about 8 am and I am on the middle of a hill. My mother lives near the coast directly in the path of Charly and is a nervous fucking wreck. I have to drive there this weekend through it because she is having surgery Monday. Fuck electricity and water, God help me if she and my grandmother run out of cigarettes:p

Get your oars out lady and hang on to your skirts. :D I'm In the middle of tornado alley. I think I'd rather have tornadoes than hurricanes anyday. Got you in my prayers Lil. PLEASE be careful if you're gonna try to drive in the stuff. I'm worried bout ya.

It's raining really bad here now.... BLAH I hate this crap! The gray rain when you can't see where you're driving. Today was beautiful out tho. The ONLY good thing about hurricanes, is the temperature drops a lot and you can stand going outside. Yep, Charley better not ruin our big car show this weekend!

Just a thought,that I do.We have a well & the toilets,will not fill the resevoir,
if you lose power!I always keep empty jugs, filled with water. As long as you can refill, the resevoir, the toilets can be flushed.I learned this, going thru
storms,with a wife & two daughters.Men will piss outside,but MOST women
won't Irish

take care of yourselves everyone!!!

I've always lived in earthquake areas .... only experienced a couple of large ones and those have all been far enough away that it mainly makes for the equivalent of a good amusement park ride ... with a bit more adrenalin packed into the moment for the fact that no one set up safety specifically for that day and time. Now that I live in So. Cal on the coast, we have El Nino years that have been interesting, but for the most part don't cause anywhere near the damage as Hurricanes or tornadoes (or if they do, it's extended over a longer period of time). So far I just keep a 24 hour emergency kit close by and a prayer in my heart. :)

I'm worried about McJim. He lives where my mom does and is in an evacuated area. If anyone hears from him please get him to post of PM me to let me know he's ok.

Pita
08-13-2004, 07:48 AM
Morning everyone. I got the news on and I am watching it get closer and closer to Tampa. Hubby has family in that area and we haven't been able to get a hold of them. I know they must have evacuated since they are a mile from the beach in Sarasota.

We are on the west side of Orlando and it can could be bad here by late this afternoon. Thanks for all the prayers Pixies. We really need them here today.

It's over now.:D I am so relieved. Not sure how much damage was done across the state. We will start leaning about all that. But it did by pass us and is moving out of state.

It was wild there for awhile. We just sat in the dark looking at the trees on our patio.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers and well wishes. Hopefully everyone will be alright.

I've read about four deaths so far - three in Cuba and one in Florida (a man trying to save others?).

It's amazing that more weren't hurt but a blessing, too!

I wander off for a couple of days and look what happens again.

Glad to see they weren't as bad as they could have been.

We had a big one here in '74 which effectively destroyed Darwin, with a death toll

probably in the hundreds. The town had so many itinerants, indiginous and

people hiding from things down south, we'll never know for sure.

Cyclone Tracy was a Cat 4.

I was at Myrtle Beach for a Bachelorette party...and we got evacuated. The one day I was there....I saw tornado's, water spouts & Hurricane wind and rain!!!! I only have one thing to say......

DAMN YOU CHARLEY!

We ended up spending the rest of our time in Columbia SC! DAMN HURRICANE!

oldfart2020

The eye of charley went over our house and boy was it strange. Heavy winds and rain then calm for a few minutes the wind and rain from the other way.
Lost our office , house roof, pool cage, two windows, grage door bent. But glad to survive
