View Full Version : I Don't Know What's Happening...

I'm still on dial-up...and I've gotten used to being slower than most while waiting for pages to open, etc. But...lately (seems to coincide with the new smilies...but it could be a coincidence) when I click on a thread to open it, it takes 30 seconds or more to open (which is a long time when you are just sitting and staring at your screen). I've gone to the potty or gone for coffee or whatever, and come back and the page is just opening! I'm slower now when posting a reply too. I click "submit quick reply" or whatever reply page I am on and that takes longer as well.
Is it my puter? I clear my cookies each time I leave. I've defragmented on a regular basis. I'm pretty diligent in keeping this thing clean. What do ya spose could be happening?

I am on cable and have not really noticed any delay so I'm glad you brought this to my attention.
Any one else having a problem recently with seriously slow loading pages?

Yep...me
I am on ADSL and some days pages can take at least 30 sec to load......i can be surfing elsewhere at the same time and other pages open immediately....so its not my connection

Is it only since the smilies or did you notice it before? I ask because over the past month I've changed more than just the smilies so I'm trying to narrow it down. The only page that takes a few secs for me is , "Who's Online".

Do you notice it more so when it's loading from one forum to another or from a forum to a thread etc or is it more so for pics?

I’ve been having some of the same. :(
I’m with Lixy on the dialup, but like Sharni, other sites pop right up (at std. dialup speed).
I can’t say it was the new smilies only because I played the hell out of them the day of their arrival. I became aware of the difference this past weekend, which was a couple days later.
I wonder how a nice new SHOUTBOX behave?

I am on DSL, and like Sharni and PF all other websites are behaving as well as before. I just noticed it last night (Wednesday) and it was really inconsistent, some threads were quick, others not. I will try to be more attentive as to if there is a theme.
Same here...on dial up too and the pages are slower to open. Like Maddy says it is inconsistant for me too. Some are opening faster than others. In fact I find that when I get notice of a new post, it is faster to open the site by clicking on a link I have already used.....hope THAT makes sense! :)

YES! I'm on dialup too. It's the new version and all the extra fancies. I just takes more time to load them all up. It's not just the smilies. It's posting replies, editing and just loading the pages. I just live with it.

I have been having problems with the speed too, it seems to be even slower at certian times of the day, when another site will pop right up no problem.

OK Thanks...I am trying to decide if it's a problem I can fix or if I need to sex someone else up :p

Well I was using sitestyle when I noticed it. The 3style seems to be going faster for me if that helps.

Lil, last time I checked, I have the same cable service as you, & I've noticed some pages are a little slow to load...by slow, I mean I might have to wait 5-10 seconds, but we've been spoiled by broadband...so I can just imagine how long it's taking for these poor dial-up people...

The only thing I've found is 'who's online' is slow but it's hard for me to judge on the POS I'm on. The connection can be slow on all sites sometimes.

Speaking of "Style3"...Recently I changed my av and sig. line, and while I was in User CP I remembered reading somewhere that we should all be on Pixies Place Forums vbulletin 3 style...so I changed to it. Now that you mention it, it could be when things started slowing down. That change came about the same time as the smilies so I don't know which is the cause.
Thanks everyone...for jumping in and helping to explain. It seems like we are so diversified here that we each have different cases.
I can go from forum to forum in a reasonable (unnoticable change) time, but when I click a thread to open it, it seems like it'll never open. My bar (down bottom) loads in increments of about 1/16 and then sits for what seems like minutes. I can hear my puter working overtime to get the page open...it says it's opening it, and my little puters (below) are glowing like mad. Then, after I shave and shit and shower, I come back and the page is finally opening! LOL...sorry, I couldn't resist. But seriously, it does take about 30 seconds or more to open. I can get back to the forum I am in in an ok time but if I click another thread to open, it happens again. I haven't been to "Who's Online" lately, so I can't tell you about that. The only other time I've noticed it is when I reply to something. Most times I click "Post Quick Reply", but occasionally I'll click "Go Advanced"...but either way, when I try and post the reply, it's slower than molasses in January.
Just as an experiment I am going back to User CP now and change back to what it was before (can't remember exactly...but I'll get back to you on it after I look at the choices)...and then I'll try opening threads. If it's not that, I'll change back to vbulletin 3 style and wait for further instructions.
BTW Lil...I only mentioned this because I have so few precious minutes here. Now that it's slower, it's even fewer precious minutes! If this is the way it is and nothing can be done about it, I'll adjust somehow!
Thanks for all the input!

Many possibilities...
Is the server where pixies is hosted also hosting other sites? Sites that might have had an increase in traffic?
Did the upgrade involve a restructuring of the database? If so, some database queries may not be as efficient as before.
Did the upgrade change the web pages such that they access the database more than they once did? Or less efficiently than they once did?
Is the traffic to the server hitting some limit imposed by the ISP that is then limiting the transfer rates to/from the server for the rest of the billing period?
Has the server's configuration been changed in some way?
I'm not that experienced in these matters but they may be things to consider.

My goodness! What did he ^^^ just say? LOL! (((((((Belial))))))) You're so cute when you talk all tekky!
Well, here's my experiment results...
On "User CP", in "edit options"...I originally changed style from "User Forum Default" to "Pixies Place vbulletin 3 style". Just now I changed from "3 style" to "sitestyle" and jumped around, opening threads, and it was real good. I could open threads faster and the skin seemed ok to look at. Then I changed to "Pixies" style and jumped around again. The skin was gray and washed out and threads were really, really slow to open. So, I went back and changed back to "3 style" and lowered the amount of replies that open on a page for me, from 30 to 20, and then I jumped around again. It was a little faster, and might be even more so if I lowered the replies to 10 per page, but still slow to open threads. I would have tried more choices, but they didn't seem like something I'd like or need. I don't want everything in "pink/default", for example. So...my conclusion from this non-scientific, non-tekky experiment...
If I set my style to "sitestyle" and keep the amount of replies on a page to 20, I can open the threads faster and live with the skin they are in.
Does that make sense...and will I be missing out on anything if I keep my style set here?
Tune in tomorrow...for another episode of...
Lixy Tries To Get Tekky Wit It!
P.S. I'm leaving for the shore tonight and may not get back here till Sunday (sometime). Not sure when I'll get on here again...but I'll be thinking of you all and hoping I didn't toss a fly in the ointment with all my experiments!
*hugs to all*

Yes Belial those are all posible causes but none of which I have control of. It's very possible that when our new skin/look was added that something done then is causing the server to be bogged down. They asked me to be watching for it. Is why I was glad Lixy let me know.
I don't think it's the smilies although having a zillion of animated ones in signatures surely doesn't help. I've sent word to the peeps who give us this place because it appears to be stuff that although I fantasize that I am a techie web goddess, I don't know how to fix this.

I think Lixy's right. It's having to wait for the full page of replies to load. I'm going to go shorten my number on the page also to see if it helps. Also when I do reply and click "submit reply" it takes 4 ever for it to submit. But if I click on my sidebar after clicking on "submit reply", It takes me quicly to the updated page! now figure that one out.

Soooooo...my plan is actually working? *giggle*
I just got back from the shore and I see Lil has a new thread up about some changes she's been experimenting with. I'm gonna flit about and see if I can detect anything. Thanks for all the help...and I hope this helped others as well! I see CGT has tweaked a few things...and for once it wasn't someone's butt! LOL! (((CGT)))

How much memory is left on you PC's hard drive?--if its full of other programs your PC maybe slower since to access other web page features and store into memory previous pages and merge their functions. Is this an occuring problem say with yahoo IM when you go to smilies on the second page?

This all just started recently Vullkan, and it doesn't happen any other place but here (not that I cheat on Pixies or anything *blushing*). I think I have it figured out so far as my puter goes. As I said, I lowered the amount of replies per page that I had loading (from 30 to 20). It helped speed things up a bit. I'm either working to see if there is anything else I can tweak to get better time or I'm living with the changes till someone finds a cure. I have plenty of memory on my hard drive. Too bad I can't say that about my brain! LOL!
