Anyone have any ideas on what I can use as a mosquito repellant? I am allergic to Deet and so far most of what I have tried - Avon stuff, citronella stuff, dryer sheets, those little battery operated things that make a sound like a dragon fly to scare the damn things.. <rolls eyes> just don't seem to work for me.

We our recent rains and being in the country where there is a lot of standing water in ditches and farm fields, I am pretty much stuck inside as there are literally clouds of them just waiting for my sweet self to walk out the door..

A neighbor used to keep a jar with rubbing alcohol, rosemary, and other pungent herbs steeping on a fence post near her garden so she could just slap it on and do her gardening. She swore by it.

LOL.. I swear - pretty soon they are going to attach themselves and take off with a person!!! These things are HUGE!!! They are bigger than a horse fly.. some of them are zebra striped...

Maybe this is an idea for a movie... instead of "The Birds" we can have "Invasion of the Mosquitos" lol

There is an herbal store in the town that we go to - I might just check with them and I will get back with ya! :D

Well here Cheyanne, we are thinking of making the mosquito our state bird! They are fat... and when you slap them, enough blood explodes out of them to fill an IV!

Anyway, the other night i was eating a raw rhubarb stalk and for the heck of it, rubbed the juice on one arm...... and not a bite....... but further experimentation is needed. Let me know how you make out......... there's always that stinky Uncle Ben's stuff! :D Even Cobalt won't nibble on ya then! :D

LOL @ Coaster....I would be ok with stinking if they would leave me alone and allow me to look at my flowers! I keep thinking about that old tobasco commercial - the one where this guy is sitting on a porch eating a taco or something and sprinkles tobasco on it and takes a bite.. he watches a mosquito land on his arm and sucks some blood.. then the mosquito flys off and blows up.. :D

A diet high in garlic. and NO bananas! Both make your sweat have an odor that mosquitos can pick up on. They like the sweet in bananas but don't like the garlic odor.

I'll be damned. Who knew that mescaline had anti mosquito properties? :teleport:

My grandmother always swore that a dab of turpentine on each arm would keep those pesky critters away.

No DEET? I wouldn't have any blood left.
Good luck

I swear by Avon's Skin So Soft...rub it on and nothing will come near you! And it also moisturizes....although a bit greasy at first.

((((Chey)))) ~~ good luck!

It appears the dude is sporting an extra bit of netting in his pants. Yum!

Er, sorry Cheyanne. I have no hints. I'm leaving myself wide open to yet another PF attack but bugs leave me alone for some reason. This year it's supposed to be a banner year for skeets but I haven't had a single bite yet (knock on wood).

Cheyanne, anything thing with Citronella oil (ex: Skin so Soft) works but the only catch is that you have to apply it pretty much every hour or so to retain it's effectiveness. Another suggestion is spraying it on your clothes instead of your skin. If DEET isn't an option, try something with permethrin (sorry I don't know any brand names for that).

AUGH! A ginormous bug drew blood last night and I just had another bite!

LOL @ Steph (in a friendly supportive way of course) :D

I have tried that Skin-So-Soft stuff and the skeetos love that stuff... I just know that they wait in the bushes for me...hmmmmmmm, something smells like that Avon Stuff.. oh! it is her!!! Lets get her!!!!!!!! <shakes head>

I have tried the citronella stuff too with no luck. They must be immune to the stuff around here because everyone else swears by the stuff too!

I am thinking about getting one of those smoke sticks.. the kind you light and then blow out and it smokes (kinda like incense) and carrying it around with me when I go outside.. lol

So, when you see smoke signals you know I am outside!

A few years ago I built a treehouse for a client. The site was right on the edge of a marsh so the mozzies and black flied got pretty bad. A sample pack from Burt's Bees came to me. In the bag was a container of bug repellant. Nothing to loose, because I had my Deet ready if it didn't work. Well, it worked pretty fair. It would sweat off quickly but it was very clear when I needed to lather up again. Check the contents, but I'm quite sure there's no Deet.

Dang treeview......that's a mighty nice little house...wish we had a good tree for one of those.

BTW...you wer'nt in the Monster Tree House epsiode were ya?

Thanks SoDak :)

That was a nicer treehouse than I could afford to build for myself. It was a fun project.

No, not on Monster Treehouse. I missed that episode.

You don't need a tree to have a treehouse. I've seen yards with nice trees that a treehouse could be built around. Use posts like I did on the this one.

A gal I used to date had a rustic treehouse out in the woods. Basically a platform with a canvas "tent" on top. there were aluminum combination storm windows on the sides. The glass could be slid up to vent. The screens kept the biting creatures out.

It was so wonderful to be there during a little wind. the tree would sway. Making love there was really fun too. Someday I'll have a treehouse of mine own where I can bring Pixies for some fun.

Okay, got a couple of suggestions for ya.

I recently bought one of those off candles that are supposed to be like super good. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but I'll give you an update as soon as I do.

Also, and this is just a wild guess but no one else has suggested it so here it is. The way my grandmother keeps alot of the unwanted flying pests away from her flowers is that she mixes up a solution of horticultural oil and insecticidal soap and applies it to most if not all the flowers. Basically gardening is her life so she's out there damn near every day. But it would seem to make sense that if you used one or the other or a combo of the two and then applied it to your skin that would help as well. Both the horticultural oil and the insecticidal soap are available in non toxic solutions that can be applied to edibles (tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.) up to the day of harvest.

Like I said, that's just a wild guess. I've never heard of anyone really trying to use that as a mosquito repellant so it's basically all theory. But maybe it's worth a try if you can't think of anything else

I dunno Chey...but Mr. Lixy ALWAYS tells me that he "has a lotion for that"! He proclaims it's magical and has versatile properties. He says "it" is a floor cleaner AND a dessert topping! It can cure bruises and pimples and sunburn...and it can shine your silver and take the mold off of old bread!

Shall I send you some? Or, ya think Cobalt can conjure up something similar?

I can tell you that the dispenser is very eye appealing...and so it can be displayed in any room in the house! Couple two, three squeezes and...*VOILA*...the miracle lotion!

*Oh GAWD! Running outta the thread with all my squeeta bites intact!*

Now... he tells me he has some "special" cure all stuff that HAS to be ingested!!!! What is this lotion you speak of??? Could it be related to Cobalt's cure all of "you just need more protein?" lol lol :D

Well... so far the best thing I have found to work is hold your breath and run like mad from the house to the car and jump in really fast! Then... you take the handy dandy newspaper left in the car for such situations and swat the 8-10 skeeters that jumped in with you.. :D

You start the car...get out the binoculars and look at your flowers & plants whilst in the vehicle! :D :D

OMG!!! ROFLMAO!!!!!!! ^^^^^^^^^

Maybe you should just build a Greenhouse and attach it to the main house via walkway.

A diet high in garlic. and NO bananas! Both make your sweat have an odor that mosquitos can pick up on. They like the sweet in bananas but don't like the garlic odor.

Sadly and stinkily, I have found this works quite well for me too. Sadly BECAUSE it makes me stinky. LOL

Good luck!
