Mariam Makeba the singer whose voice stirred hopes of freedom among millions in apartide torn South Africa passed away after giving a performance in Italy.She was 76. Widey known as Momma Africa,Makeba had been banned in her own coountry by the apartide authoities she struggled against.In 1963 she testified before the United Nations about the rigid government in So.Africa resulting in having her citizenship revoked.While in the US,she married Black Panther Stokely Charmichael. Makeba performed with Paul Simon on the Graceland tour,and finally in the late 80's was able to return to a free South Africa. She was best known for the Click song and Pata Pata that had been aranged by Harry Belefonte.

I just read about her. Interesting lady. She died doing what she loved. I hope to be so lucky.
