We left Darwin on the Ghan, a train which runs across the continent from top to bottom (and back).

It's the middle of the monsoon, and even the concrete animals were miserable.

The train is supposed to be pretty upmarket, with dining and bar cars straight out of the 1950s.

In Katherine, our first stop, we went for a trip up Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk in the new talk. The gorge was in flood, and we were unable to go beyond the first rapids. The water was about 15 ft above normal.

We made it into Alice Springs after an overnight snooze.

Alice Springs refused city status, because it is iconically "A Town Like Alice".

Our accommodation on the train was a little cramped. The beds were double bunks and the combined washroom/shower/toilet is only about a square yard.

The basin and toilet fold out of the wall.

Yeah, I'll say. That looks like quite the bonding experience, OF.

Our accommodation on the train was a little cramped ...

Similar to the facilities on a ship.

On a ship you have the chance of an iceberg putting you out of your misery.

After we got to Adelaide, we did a trip up to the vineyards of the Clare Valley.

While up there, we stayed in a wonderful old house from 1879.

The place, true to it's time, had a coach-house and stable I'd have loved to turn into a modern house.

The district's other claim to fame was that it was settled by Cornish copper miners. A played out mine at Burra, apart from it's beautiful lake, showed that they built for the long term.

We left the vineyards and headed into New South Wales.

We had planned to meander through the beautiful Victorian

countryside, but a couple of family commitments put paid to

that, luckily. Mildura, an old inland riverport, was a breath of fresh air.

We took a trip on a paddle-wheeler down through the locks, and on the

return met the biggest moth I've ever seen.

At Narrandera we found another moth, this one in captivity.

When I was on a SEARCH flight(in the service)there was a COCKROACH that
big in the shower,at the temp barracks in Bermuda.Needless to say,I didn't
stay in the shower very long!I was afraid to step on him with bare feet!

Yours looks kinda cicada-like to me.
Obviously looking for his cousin from the other side of the world.

(That's an 8" X 8" column he's contemplating picking up & carrying away.)
