Actually, it's Russian-I don't speak Ukrainian, but the two languages are quite similar, and share an alphabet, and in this case, the sentiment is the same in either language.

Basically, telling Putin off in his own language; no better way to ensure he gets the message.

I doubt it, as well, but the high casualties, lies to his own military about what a walkover it would be, and collapse of morale might force him to listen to the people.
