This is not a joke, it's a genuine news article.

The United Nations has scoffed at claims by a Texas judge that UN troops could invade the southern US state to settle a possible civil war, which the judge warned could be sparked if Barack Obama is re-elected in November.

When asked if the United Nations had plans to invade Texas, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon's spokesman, Martin Nesirky, said that was "absolutely ridiculous".

He later added: "No one, not even the United Nations, would ever mess with Texas."

He was responding to comments from Tom Head, a county judge in Lubbock, who told a local Fox News station on Monday that taxes needed to be raised so the county could prepare for contingencies if Mr Obama was re-elected for a second term.

"He (Obama) is going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the UN. What's going to happen when that happens? I'm thinking worst case scenario - civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe," Mr Head said.

"What's going happen ... if the public decides to do that? He's going to send in UN troops, I don't want them in Lubbock County. I'm going to stand in front of their armoured personnel carriers and say 'You're not coming in here'."

Mr Head told Fox News he has the backing of his local sheriff.

"I've already asked him 'Are you going to back me?' and he said 'Yeah I'll back you'."

And when I say our system is broken beyond repair it is NOT unpatriotic. If people with that kind of mentality hold office in a system not within an asylum, I see the system as irreversibly crippled.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. - Declaration of Independence

I found a shell at the rifle range today, a stranger.

For all our firearm literate Pixies, a conundrum.

PF, is this from one of your sniper weapons? It'd be great for knocking pegs off clotheslines.

jay-t
08-31-2012, 04:34 PM
can you give us the inside diameter of the neck? It will give us an idea of the caliber.

Lord Snow
08-31-2012, 05:13 PM
There are only 3 rim fire calibers I know of. 22, 22 magnum, and 17.

PantyFanatic
08-31-2012, 07:30 PM
I don't know if the spec for some necked-down .17 matches your case samples but I have seen that type. I was told it was mostly popular with fur hunters that want absolute minimal pelt damage. All hear-say so I don't know but have seen that type cartridge in a bolt action.

I have heard of an obscure 9mm revolver cartridge but I've never seen the gun or the bullet so don't know if it really exists.

PantyFanatic
08-31-2012, 08:17 PM
Now I'm embarrassed. :o A quick look at a scale size chart that use to hang on the wall shows more common rimfire than I realized. They have been chambered in both handgun and rifles it seems and the best match for your cartridge looks like 17HMR. I haven't researched yet but don't see anything about that mystical 9mm. I do see something called 'Mach2' that I never noticed before.

Oldfart
08-31-2012, 09:19 PM
Can't be, PF. I held the shell against the screen image and they're different sizes.

I checked the CCI website and they agree with you, but what do they know? They just make the thing.

Oldfart
08-31-2012, 09:24 PM
can you give us the inside diameter of the neck? It will give us an idea of the caliber.

PantyFanatic

OMG! :yikes:
"5mm, .32, .41, 8mm, ................."
WAAAAAY more rimfire than I ever realized existed from cursory search.

That "HMR" is a Hornady product it seems. I look at them as the big dog for reloading supply. I'm certain, like everything else in life, there is a LOT to learn about rimfire.

Oldfart
08-31-2012, 10:01 PM
My reading of it was that the pill is by Hornady, the case etc by CCI.

Muzzle velocities of about 2400fps are not to be sniffed at.

PF a 9mm rim fire wouldn't be necked down. The only pistol cartridges I know of that is necked down is in the wildcat calibers. With the case being an inch and a 1/16th long the 17 hmr comes in the closest. With most of the other rim fire rounds not listed on the chart are in the world of collectors and not likely to find the brass on the range.

Oldfart
09-02-2012, 09:37 PM
I've figured out that even if you neck down a 9mm long, you can only load about as much powder as the .17/.22mag. The only difference is the strength of the case.

PantyFanatic
09-02-2012, 10:08 PM
I was finally able to find something on the "9mm Flobert" ghost bullet. Lol Actually not much but enough to verify it does exist. :wobbly:

…….A notable rimfire still in production in*Europe, and chambered by the Winchester Model 39 in the 1920s, is the*9 mm Flobert. This cartridge can fire a small ball, but is primarily loaded with a small amount of shot, and used in*smoothbore*guns as a miniature shotgun, or "garden gun". Power and range are very limited, making it suitable only for pest control.[1] …….

Pasted from <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rimfire_ammunition>

As for necked down pistol ammo, I didn't mean to infer I had been told that about the 9mm rim fire. Only that there was suppose to be one which at first I thought he was referring to the .380, but he was adamant about it being rim fire.

The only neck down pistol cartridge I know of off hand is the newish "FN Five-Seven" which I'm totally against. I don't see a place in the civilian market for it.

My brother's pitt got to come home from the animal hospital. Yesterday was scary! It wasn't a dog fight like we originally thought...their mastiff pounced on her playing (they are normally great playmates) and squished her a little...sent her into shock. She's doing MUCH better today and is on her way back to health.

This is an example of just how ridiculous glitches can hurt us. From the OZ ABC news site,

A French woman who received a telephone bill for an amount equivalent to nearly 6,000 times the country's annual economic output has had the real amount she owed waived - after finally convincing the company they must have made a mistake.

Solenne San Jose, from Pessac in the Bordeaux region of south-western France, could not believe her eyes when she opened the bill to discover she was being asked to pay 11,721,000,000,000,000 euros ($A14,676,614,570,049,452) to close her account.

"There were so many zeroes I couldn't even work out how much it was," she said.

Ms San Jose's alarm increased when operators at Bouygues Telecom told her they could not amend the computer-generated statement or stop the balance from being debited from her bank account.

Only after a series of frantic calls did the company finally admit the bill should have been for 117.21 euros.

Bouygues Telecom said the mix-up had been due to a printing error and a subsequent misunderstanding between the client and staff at their call centre.

AFP

"after finally convincing . . ." Sheesh!

Two things.

1. It's PF's special day on Google.

2. In the News.
Female visitors to Indonesian prisons will be searched after a male terrorist walked free by donning the Islamic Burka dress.

Police say Roki Aprisdianto was serving a six-year jail sentence after being arrested late last year for attacks on police posts and churches in Solo, in central Java.

Aprisdianto slipped on the burka - which covers from the head to ankles - and then walked out with a group of women who had been visiting inmates.

To stop further cases of criminals cross-dressing to escape, Jakarta police are assigning female officers to prisons and detention centres to check all female visitors.

From the Oz ABC News.

A team of American scientists has discovered traces of bacteria in Western Australia's Pilbara dating back more than 3.9 billion years.

Nora Noffke is a biochemist from Old Dominion University in the US state of Virginia and spoke at a recent Geological Society of America meeting about her group's findings.

She believes the traces belong to the oldest fossils in the earth's history.

The university has confirmed the find, but says it is not prepared to comment further until the release of an official journal.

Pilbara MP Robin Chapple says it is an exciting development.

"To actually have a plate that we've been able to identify at that age in the Pilbara, I think is very exciting," he said.

However, Mr Chapple concedes it is unlikely to do much for the region's tourism industry.

"The tourism market would be very, very limited because I mean there are only so many people who really get their jollies out of watching or looking at bits of rock," he said.
